French Potatoes

What You Need:

  • 3 pounds potatoes
  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
  • 1 stick butter
  • 2 C cream
  • 1 C milk
  • mixed dried herbs
  • salt and pepper
  • 3 cups shredded Gruyere cheese

How to Make It:
  • Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Cut butter into small dice.
  • Rub the bottom and sides of a heavy baking dish (9 X 13 inch) with crushed garlic cloves.
  • Butter the bottom and sides of the baking dish.
  • Place a single layer of potatoes on bottom of dish, sprinkle with salt and pepper, herbs, two to three tablespoons of cheese and dot with butter dices.
  • Continue layering until you run out of potatoes and end with one cup of cheese sprinkled on top. Dot with the butter dices.
  • Mix the cream and milk in a separate container.
  • Pour the cream and milk mixture into the side and over the top then jiggle the dish a bit to get the liquid to spread throughout.
  • Bake for about one hour or until potatoes are tender and the top nicely browned.
  • Allow to cool 15 minutes before serving.

Makes 8 servings

Tips:
You can substitute other cheese like Swiss, Cheddar, etc. to suit your taste.
